Hopkins ton-up for Volts

Gareth Hopkins scored a century as State Otago Volts made a solid start to their State Championship at Dunedin’s University Oval.

State Northern Knights captain James Marshall won the toss and elected to field.

Graham Aldridge trapped Jordan Sheed (six) lbw, and the Knights had Otago at 49 for three in the 16th over.

But a middle-order fight back from the Volts, led by Hopkins’ 101 and knocks of 61 each by Nathan McCullum and Neil Broom restored momentum.

At stumps, Otago was 366 for nine after 100 overs.
