Hinds heroine ready for White Ferns challenge

Sara McGlashan completed a memorable 48 hours when she was named in the White Ferns squad to face India this summer.

Already a regular face in the national side, she returns to the party as a State League winner for the first time.

McGlashan starred as State Central Hinds completed a memorable victory over Sate Canterbury Magicians at Christchurch’s QEII Park.

She was named Player of the Match after her 55 not out gave the Hinds their first-ever League title, replacing the reigning champions Magicians.

McGlashan said: “The girls were buzzing about it all week and it tops off the season. Lincoln (Doull, CD coach) said we’d be underdogs, and, to an extent, had nothing to lose.

“There’s a great team spirit and it was a very satisfying way to end the season.”

Canterbury topped the round-robin stage and defeated the Hinds twice during the regular season.

However, those defeats gave CD an insight into their rivals’ key strengths.

“We were very happy that we were able to restrict their top four,” McGlashan added. “We bowled and fielded really well and kept them to a relatively low total, for their standards.

“They’re top order’s been playing so well that their middle to order hasn’t been needed, so we were able to put them under pressure.”

With the victory behind her, McGlashan now awaits the arrival of India and the first White Ferns games of the summer.

“It’ll be new this year we have a new coach and a new team, so I’m not sure what to expect,” she admitted.

“The Indians did well in getting to the World Cup final last year, but have quite a lot of travelling to do. We are going into it with some expectations to do well.”
