Four Hamilton Boys High School players were making their fourth appearance at the Gillette Cup finals this year.
Hamilton BHS captain Peter Bocock, Scott Kuggeleijn, Matthew Thomas and Steven Cullingworth have all been part of the team for four years.
In today’s final Hamilton, the reigning champions, came up against Christchurch Boys High School, winners in 2006 and 2007. Hamilton’s Steven Cullingworth says it’s been an amazing run.
“It’s a privilege to be part of the Gillette Cup,” he says. “We’ve worked hard all year so it’s nice to be rewarded with a place in the final”.
For Cullingworth, friendships have been part of the Gillette Cup experience and he will look back with fond memories.
“There are some funny guys in the team. We’ve known each other for a long time through school and we know that we will always have special friendships because of cricket.”
The senior members of the team have worked closely with the younger players, to ensure the team continues to be successful after the older boys have left.
“We asked the boys to approach us during the year and we have helped them. We do what we can to give them confidence,” he said.
Although Cullingworth is saying goodbye to the Gillette Cup, he won’t be saying goodbye to cricket – he will be heading to Wintec in the new year to study sports management.
