BLACKCAPS opening batsman Martin Guptill has been named captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors for the upcoming edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).
Guptill has played every year since the inaugural 2013 tournament and been with the Warriors for the past two seasons.
The 29-year-old's Twenty20 form in recent times has been exceptional, currently sitting third in the ICC batting rankings. Guptill averages 34.74 in International Twenty20, boasting a strike rate of over 130. In his 28 previous games in the CPL he averages over 35, including seven half-centuries to his name.
The West Auckland local said he was looking forward to the challenge of wearing the arm-band.
“It is a huge thrill and a great honour for me to be selected as Guyana Amazon Warriors captain for the forthcoming CPL season.
“I am really excited about working with a talented crop of emerging local and international talent and we will be working hard to try and be consistent and go one step further and clinch the title which has eluded the Warriors on two occasions."
The Warriors will play in the opening match of the tournament on June 30. Other New Zealanders in the CPL will be Colin Munro, Anton Devcich and former BLACKCAPS captain Brendon McCullum.
