Counting down the best of Georgie Pie Super Smash this week.

Smash hits top ten: week one

The top ten

One
Adam Milne’s explosive maiden over. We’ve never seen Kruger van Wyk jump so high to stop the ball and the slips were virtually on the boundary. 145 kph smoke on the pitch!

Two
Spectacular yorkers. Mitchell McClenaghan take a bow — twice. One rocketed through the the legs of Jesse Ryder to smash his middle stump and deliver a wicket maiden, while the winning yorker last ball shattered Sam Wells. Even better is then you get to watch Mitch’s celebration facials.

undefined

Three
Wicket maidens are rare as hen’s teeth in Twenty20s and we saw two in one weekend. Todd Astle’s wrong ’un to bowl Bevan Small was a doozy, his wicket maiden the icing on the cake for a spinner who created great pressure all innings.

Four
The classicists who showed pure striking at its best still has a large role in short format cricket. Think Martin Guptill’s straight hit off Dirk Nannes, halfway up the bank. Think that whole opening partnership between Guppy and Anaru Kitchen. Think Colin de Grandhomme powering the ball straight into the camera tower. Think Michael Bracewell slamming Scott Kuggeleijn into the tower as well. Think Aaron Redmond smoking boundaries past the fielders all over the show in his 46.

undefined

Five
Speaking of Redders, how solid was the senior pro’s balance catching Rob Nicol just inside the rope? Thirty-five and legs like a spring chicken.

Six
Catches win matches. Our pick of the best? Dean Brownlie’s airborne take at slip, flying to his right to finish off Redmond. Derek de Boorder diving away left almost to slip to dismiss Daniel Flynn cheap as chips. Michael Bates getting under a skier from de Boorder. Ben Smith catching a tracer bullet off Milne in the covers to stop Neil Broom. Graeme Aldridge perfectly judging a difficult swirler off Jono Boult, Flynn’s midfield tracer take in the same match against the Firebirds.

Seven
Logan van Beek. The 24-year-old’s put on a yard of pace and bowled a pearler to knock out George Worker’s middle pole.

undefined

Eight
It may have been brief, but wily maestro Daniel Vettori’s duel with gun batsman Jesse Ryder was more than worth the price of admission. One on one, neither man backing down.

Nine
How sharp was that run out of Brownlie by Bracewell? Seeing it in a split second, sprinting round from slip to collect and then fire the ball at the stumps from the leg side. Brilliance.

Ten
Daryl Mitchell’s death over ramp for six off Dirk Nannes. It’s not T20 without a bit of inventive guts and smarts under pressure.

One to Watch

Right-arm offie Jono Boult’s a quiet but fierce achiever who’s probably the least recognised of the Knights’ bowling attack. Many fans are more familiar with his tall younger brother Trent, who opens the pace attack for the BLACKCAPS and plays alongside Jono in the Knights when he’s home. From Mount Maunganui, Boult the elder, who’s 28, worked hard on his fielding standards over the past two seasons to bring his all-round game together and force a more regular spot in a team that’s already loaded with international spinners — Daniel Vettori, Anton Devcich and (when he was available) Kane Williamson. That’s tenacity. You see it on his face every time he delivers the ball, locked in a one-on-one mental battle with the batsmen as he tries to pin them down through the middle and even, as was the case last weekend, in the final over.

Are You Winning?

Get creative, wear your most colourful supporter’s outfit this Friday, Saturday or Sunday at Seddon Park and you could score yourself a rare souvenir — one of the ORIGINAL playing shirts from the inaugural Island of Origin Twenty20.
