Elliott unbeaten in Firebirds win

Grant Elliott’s unbeaten 91 helped secure a six-wicket win for State Wellington Firebirds over State Otago Volts at Alexandra’s Molyneux Park.

Volts’ Greg Todd top-scored in the match with 95 to guide the hosts to 226 for eight, enjoying a stand of 80 with Neil Broom (42).

English all-rounder Alex Gidman and Nathan McCullum both provided 22 in supporting roles to Todd, who struck fours and three sixes in a 130-ball innings.

Seamer Charlie Shreck, medium-pacer Jesse Ryder and spinner Luke Woodcock took two wickets each for the Firebirds.

Captain Michael Parlane (34) and debutant Steve Gellatly (33) provided cameos in the visitors’ reply, but it was New Zealand A representative Elliott who led the way.

The South African-born right hander struck seven boundaries, including one six, to claim victory.
