Dippenaar sparks Proteas

South African opener Boeta Dippenaar has scored an unbeaten 85 to lead his team to a five-wicket win over Zimbabwe in the first one-day international in Bloemfontein.

Set a modest target of 202 for victory, South Africa was anything but convincing in its run chase.

Dippenaar carried his bat in his 127-ball innings but his team-mates failed to lend much support.

Losing its first wicket after just three overs, South Africa was immediately on the back foot.

Loots Bosman was dismissed for five, Herschelle Gibbs for two and when Kallis went for just four, the Proteas were in trouble at 3/33.

However, a 121-run stand between Dippenaar and Jean-Paul Duminy put South Africa on track for victory.

Duminy was eventually dismissed for 60 but the damage had been done and South Africa cruised to victory with five wickets and 6.1 overs to spare.

Ed Rainsford was the best of the Zimbabwe bowlers, taking 2-29 off 10 overs.

Earlier, Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat. Vusi Sibanda hit 51 but Shaun Pollock, Makhaya Ntini (1-29) and captain Jacques Kallis (2-18) made runs hard to come by.

It was South Africa's first one-day international since their record breaking score of 9-438 against Australia in March.
