Sara McGlashan - Diary 1
Members of the White Ferns will give provide diary entries during the Rose Bowl in Australia and 2011 Quad series in England.
It seems so long ago yet it seems like just the other day. A day I’ll never forget - yet a day I want to forget. Four months since the earthquake and here we are in Brisbane, set to play the remaining three games of the Rose Bowl. A series that we started back in Nelson on the 28th of December and was postponed after February 22nd.
Any hope of getting out of Christchurch and off to Australia for some warmer weather was soon dashed as we arrived to news that the day before was the coldest in June here since 1916. We did have to laugh though as it had got up to 12.6 degrees.
Since the earthquake most of us were put off going into high-rise buildings and lifts. We had to get over that fear pretty soon as we checked in and were given keys to the 28th floor. It does go up to 44 so it could be worse. Even though we are in a different city, a different country, it’s still a strange feeling.
We had sessions on Friday and Saturday and it was great to train outside on grass. Doddy (Nat Dodd) was particularly pleased to train outdoors and see the ball as she had been in Hamilton batting in the fog lately.
Waking up Sunday to rain was no surprise. The weather forecast since arriving hadn’t been great and it was also how the series started with the first game in Hamilton washed out.
Once the game was called of we did some fitness (run and weights) before heading to the Gabba for training. After that, it was back to the hotel for a pool recovery session. Come three o’clock it felt like time for a nap!
Here’s hoping we can get underway tomorrow.
