Christchurch Boys and King’s to contest top place
Today’s final round of pool matches at NZCT Junior Boys Cup (Year 9 and 10) saw Christchurch Boys’ High School and King’s College top their pools and qualify for the playoff for first and second.
Both sides scored comprehensive wins on day three in warm, sunny conditions – with three wins each from their three matches in pool play. Their results were critical to determining the placings for tomorrow’s crossover games.
POOL A:
King’s College (Auckland) v Otago Boys’ High School
King’s College: 187/7 (Cameron Gibbons 23, Luke Williamson 21, Harry Nash 78)Otago BHS: 92/9 (Sam Ellis 35; Ben Turner 3/15, Mark Chapman 3/23)

Otago BHS won the toss and put King’s into bat. Although they lost a couple of wickets in the early part of their innings they didn’t panic. Solid contributions by opener Cameron Gibbons and Luke Williamson provided a platform for another excellent innings from Harry Nash of 78 to see them through to a competitive tally of 187/7. Alec Hodgson took 2/24 for Otago BHS.
In reply Otago BHS made a solid start, but through the middle stages of their innings they lost momentum due to pressure from accurate bowling and athletic fielding by the King’s side and after their allotted overs had only managed to accumulate 92/9. Sam Ellis from Otago BHS showed the most resistance with 35. Ben Turner and Mark Chapman each took three wickets.
St Peter’s School (Cambridge) v Francis Douglas Memorial College (New Plymouth)

St Peter’s won the toss and batted, and through a series of solid partnerships amassed a total of 201/7, although four of their batsmen did manage to run themselves out. Douglas Bradley, Tim Seifert, Eddie Walker and Sam Pulis all made valued contributions.
Francis Douglas opener Sam Fastier with a resolute 68 held his team’s innings together, but only Ricky Riccitelli with 19 not out could aid him, in getting their total up to 168/9 in 40 overs. Harsimran Mahal and Miles Rolleson were the best of the St Peter’s bowlers with three wickets each.
POOL B:
Hamilton Boys’ High School v Christchurch Boys’ High School
Hamilton BHS: 116 (Robert Kaihi 26; Shuaib Ahmed 2/32, Tom Gore 2/24, Nick Tilley 3/16)Christchurch BHS: 117/2 (David Wakefield 56no, Henry Reese 31)

Christchurch BHS won the toss and put Hamilton BHS into bat. While Hamilton BHS were steady they struggled to develop any substantial partnerships and were all out in the 32nd over for 116 with Robert Kaihi scoring 26. Wickets for Christchurch BHS were shared between Shuaib Ahmed, Tom Gore and Nick Tilley.
Christchurch BHS made short work of the reply with captain David Wakefield leading from the front with a well compiled 56 not out. He shared an opening stand with Henry Reese of 60 which provided the platform for them to knock off the required runs in the 20th over.
Lindisfarne College (Hastings) v Hutt International Boys’ School

Lindisfarne won the toss and opted to bat. Opener Michael D’Esposito scored 43 and Jack Arnall 25, but at 101/8 things looked a little shaky, until numbers 9 and 10, Mitchell Hammond and Ben Reid, added a further 60 for the ninth wicket to see them post 161/8. Spinner Brett Johnson was the main destroyer for Hutt International with 4/16 and he was well assisted by Kieran McComb with 2/17.
Hutt International’s innings was immediately on the back foot at 4/12 due some quality fast bowling from tall, left-arm quick Jack Arnall. Hutt International’s captain Brett Johnson innings of 36 provided the only real defiance from his team which were bundled out for 80. Ben Reid with an economical spell off his eight overs and Jake Harvey were also in the wickets for Lindisfarne.
