DAY 3: National Under 17's Tournament Results and Match Report

Scores at the end of play Day 3, 16^th January 2009, 1-day round of games

Otago vs Canterbury

  Canterbury;   214/9 (H Nicholls 75, M Henry 57, K Russell 3-41, D Dukes 3-48, S Krugger 2-38) beat Otago; 133 (B Cant 28, M Hunter 17, M Collins 17, T Van Woerkom 3-12)

  After deciding to bat first Canterbury slumped to 44-4 thanks to some excellent early bowling from Kane Russell (3-41). Thanks to a 5^th wicket partnership led by Henry Nicholls (75) took them to 103. Nicholls was also involved with Matt Henry (57) in a 101 run 6^th wicket partnership helping Canterbury to a respectable 214-9. The pick of the Otago bowlers were Daniel Dukes (3-48) and Kane Russell (3-41). Despite an opening partnership of 42 Otago never threatened to get the 215 needed to beat Canterbury. All the Canterbury bowlers giving very little away with Theo Van Woerkom producing excellent figures of 3-12 of 6 over’s. Ben Cant was the only Otago batsman to offer any real resistance against the Canterbury bowlers scoring 28 of 66 balls. Otago where not helped by the fact 3 of their batsman where run out. Canterbury win by 81 runs.

Auckland vs Northern Districts

  Northern Districts; 207/9 (E McKillop 42, R Fitz Johns 35*, I Sodhi 3-17, J Morris 2-44) beat Auckland; 142 (C Fletcher 21, C Elton 17, R Darkins 3-13, M Thomas 3-23)

  ND made a solid start reaching 33 before losing their first wicket, from that point forward wickets where lost at regular intervals and it was only a swift unbeaten 10^th wicket partnership of 21 which saw ND pass 200. Eli McKillop with 42 of 70 balls was ND’s leading scorer with Ross Fitz Johns contributing 35 not out in the lower order. Ish Sodhi bowled with great control for Auckland taking 3-17 from his 10 overs; he was ably supported by Jayden Morris who finished with 2-44 from his 10 overs.Auckland where all out for 142 in 42.5 over’s in reply to ND’s 207-9. Auckland lost wickets at regular intervals and at no stage getting the better of the ND bowlers, Cameron Fletcher with 21 of 43 balls the only batsman to get out of the teens. All the ND bowlers put pressure on Auckland with Rory Darkins taking advantage of the pressure created by his fellow bowlers taking 3-13 of 5.5 over’s. Mattie Thomas with 3-23 of 9 over’s did the early damage helping his team to a 65 run win.

Central Districts vs Wellington

  Central Districts; 275/8 (B Wheeler 86, S McConville 30, H Wright 3-27, T Gibson 2-30, H Kyne 2-59) beat Wellington; 125 (N Ward 21, B Small 5-36, T Haggas 2-29)

  Central Districts posted the highest 1^st innings total of the day in large due to a well made 86 of 78 balls from Dane Wheeler. Seven other CD batsmen achieved double figures, Sam McConville with 30 being the next highest scorer. The Wellington bowlers struggled to contain the CD batsman with Harry Wright having the most impressive figures of 2-27 of his 10 over’s closely followed by Tom Gibson with 2-30 of 10 over’s.

Despite a solid start of 36 for the opening partnership, Wellington never looked like challenging the 275 made by CD. Nick Ward opening the innings was the highest scorer for Wellington making 21 from 20 balls. Bevan Small caused the most damage taking 5-36 in his 10 over’s well supported by Ted Haggis 2-29 from 7 over’s. CD win by 150 runs.
