Daniel Vettori named The National Bank Cricketer of the Year

Daniel Vettori has been named The National Bank Player of the Year for the second consecutive year – the fourth time in six years the captain has been named New Zealand’s top cricketer.
 
The 31 year-old BLACKCAPS captain also lifted the Winsor Cup for First-Class bowling and the Walter Hadllee Trophy for One-Day International bowler.
 
In the award period the talented all-rounder hit 742 Test runs at an average of 49.46, 398 ODI runs at 30.61 and 120 Twenty20 runs at 24.00.  His spin bowling returned 32 Test wickets at 36.75, 27 ODI wickets at 20.29 and 10 Twenty20 wickets at 22.80.
 
New Zealand Cricket Chief Executive Justin Vaughan said Vettori richly deserves the honour after another memorable year with the BLACKCAPS.
 
“Daniel is and has been a consistently excellent performer for New Zealand over a long period and his fourth National Bank Player of the Year award is a reflection of his hard work and dedication,” said Vaughan.
 
“He has been a force in all forms of the game and you just have to look at the ICC rankings for confirmation with Daniel ranked as the top ODI bowler, second ranked Test all-rounder and fourth highest Twenty20 wicket-taker.
 
“It is great to see that his outstanding year has also been acknowledged by the ICC where he has been nominated for the ICC Cricketer of the Year and ODI Cricketer of the Year,” Vaughan added.

The 2009-10 season saw Ross Taylor cement himself as New Zealand’s premier First-Class batsman.  In 11 matches he struck 1,078 runs at a healthy average of 53.90 and set a New Zealand record for the fastest Test century when he hit the Australians for an 81 ball ton.

The BLACKCAPS skipper used his ability to combine change-of-pace, accuracy and guile to take 39 First-Class scalps at an average of 34.89.

Walter Hadlee Trophy - batting

Brendon McCullum’s explosive batting at the top of the order has been a highlight this year with his 131 against Pakistan in the UAE helping the BLACKCAPS to their first away series win against Pakistan.

The BLACKCAPS skipper is one of the most respected players in world cricket and currently ranked as the world’s best One-Day International bowler.

JR Reid Best All Rounder Trophy
Awarded to the best all rounder. The all rounder award covers all forms of cricket and includes wicketkeepers.   [2009 winner: Daniel Vettori]
Winner:  Brendon McCullum
 
Brendon McCullum consistently delivered quality performances.  As a batsman he hit centuries in all three forms of the game.  He also provided a safe pair of hands behind the stumps taking a combined total of 55 catches.

The Phyl Blackler Cup
Awarded to the bowler whose performances in women's cricket have been the most meritorious.  [2009 winner: Kate Pulford]
Winner:  Nicola Browne

Nicola Browne led the White Ferns attack taking 16 Twenty20 and nine One-Day International wickets.  The talented seamer was the leading wicket-taker at the ICC World Twenty20 tournament and was named player of the event.

The Ruth Martin Cup
Awarded to the batsman whose performances in women's cricket have been the most meritorious.  [2009 winner: Haidee Tiffen]
Winner:  Suzie Bates

This season Suzie Bates notched up 185 One-Day International and 230 Twenty20 runs including three half centuries.  Her outstanding batting led to her picking up three player of the match awards as well as theTwenty20 player of the series award during the recent tour of England. 

Fans Choice for Outstanding Individual Performance
The Fans’ Choice award for Outstanding Individual Performance is voted on by cricket fans across the nation. It recognises individual performances that were stellar, either showcasing the massive skill arsenal of the players themselves or having the power to alter match outcomes.  www.blackcaps.co.nz/fanschoice

Winner: Brendon McCullum: Exhilarating 116* off 56 deliveries

McCullum ultimately set up the win over Australia with an exhilarating 116 not out that included an incredible 12 fours and eight sixes - only the second T20 century behind West Indies captain Chris Gale (117).

Sir Jack Newman Award
Presented to an outstanding junior cricket administrator in New Zealand each year for past and present services to the game.   [2009 winner: Stephen Jones]
Winner:   John Grocott from Christchurch

John Grocott was has been involved with junior cricket for over 50 years and has a long standing association with East Shirley Cricket Club and junior cricket in Christchurch. He has been a driving force behind junior cricket, developing and running a junior programme before the advent of MILO cricket.
 
The Bert Sutcliffe Medal
For outstanding services to cricket. [2009 winner: Alan Whimp]
Winner:   Martin Horton (award accepted by Denis Currie on behalf of Martin who is in the UK)
 
Former England international cricketer and Northern Districts representative was appointed as New Zealand’s first National Director of Coaching in 1967. He is credited to building the skills of the players who formed the base of New Zealand’s successes during the ‘golden era’ of the 1970s and 80s.

Gillette Young Player of the Year

Winner: Matthew Rowe, of Christchurch Boys High School

Matthew Rowe’s outstanding batting, dedication and commitment to cricket, played a key role in his school winning the Gillette Cup trophy during the 2009/10 season. He finished the tournament with a batting average of 59 with and made valuable contributions of 2/27 and 2/33 with the ball.
 
Domestic Player of the Year – men
Awarded to the most outstanding player in men's domestic cricket. [2009 winner: Mathew Sinclair]
Winner:  Michael Bates

Auckland Aces left-arm quick Michael Bates was the most consistent bowler across all three formats taking 37 Plunket Shield, 14 One-Day and 15 HRV Cup wickets.  He capped the season by taking out the overall Mitre 10 Most Valuable Players award.
 
Domestic Player of the Year – women
Awarded to the most outstanding player in women's domestic cricket. [2009 winner: Sophie Devine]
Winner:  Nicola Browne

Northern Spirit all-rounder Nicola was the top run scorer in both the One-Day and Twenty20 formats with 474 and 150 runs respectively. She also picked 16 One-Day and five Twenty20 wickets and capped the fine year by winning the Mitre 10 Women’s Most Valuable Player award.
