New Zealand Umpire Kathy Cross has been announced as one of the umpires for next month’s ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2017, which will be hosted in Colombo.
The tournament see’s ten teams fighting for four qualification spots, with the winners going through to the World Cup in England in June later this year.
Cross is looking forward to the tournament and the chance to continue to develop her skills.
“Opportunities through ICC events always bring a great deal of excitement. Nothing is guaranteed and so getting the opportunities to officiate at events allows me to continue to be a good role model, even more importantly now that there are other women being appointed to events,” said Cross.
“It is always my aim to maintain high standards of professionalism, attitude, and leadership in all aspects of the game.”
The importance of this event is that I continue to maintain, learn and deliver skills learned, so that I present the best possible performance on each match-day. Being able to live up to these expectations is challenge in itself. Therefore, preparation and continuing improvement is so important.”
The sides competing come from all around the world, including cricketing giants such as India, Pakistan, and South Africa.
Women’s Cricket is developing quickly, especially with tournaments such as the Women’s Big Bash and Kia Super League providing opportunities for players and umpires to develop their skills.
“This tournament will showcase how women's cricket has grown and become a very contestable arena. The physical, emotional, and mental toughness will produce the highest of standards. The four places that are being contested will definitely bring out the best in all the competing countries.”
