BLACKCAPS win ICC Spirit of Cricket Award

The BLACKCAPS were named as the recipients of the Spirit of Cricket Award at the LG ICC Awards celebration in Johannesburg.

It is the second time New Zealand has won this award having picked it up in 2004.

Captain Daniel Vettori picked up the award on behalf of the team and said, “I think most teams within world cricket aspire to the intangible notion of the Spirit of Cricket. It’s not easy to define but I think when you get out on the field of play most guys know where that line is and most play the game in the right way.

“If we can couple the Spirit of Cricket award with the ICC Champions Trophy then we will be very happy indeed.”

New Zealand Cricket CEO Justin Vaughan was at the event and is hoping to see the BLACKCAPS add another trophy to the cabinet.

“It was great to see Daniel Pick up the award.  Two more good performances and he’ll be bringing back the ICC Champions Trophy.

“In spite of the injuries, the team are extremely positive going into the semi-final against Pakistan on Saturday. They are quietly confident.”

Mitchell Johnson took the top prize of ICC Player of the Year with fellow Australian Peter Siddle edging out Jesse Ryder for Emerging Player of the Year.
