In breaking news, tonight’s stunning Chappell-Hadlee victory has pushed the BLACKCAPS into the world’s top two teams in the ICC’s official Reliance ODI Rankings.
The Seddon Park thriller — a fighting, fitting tribute to captain Brendon McCullum in his final One-Day International for the BLACKCAPS — saw the New Zealanders dislodge India for second spot on the closely-watched table.
Relive the excitement of the match
World number one Australia, vanquished in the Chappell-Hadlees, is the only side left ahead of the BLACKCAPS on the table.
The BLACKCAPS claimed the Chappell-Hadlee matches in the ANZ International Series 2-1, having put up a crushing first-up win at Eden Park before bouncing back from a loss in Wellington with an inspirational, team-wide performance that stopped the Australians in their tracks at Seddon Park.
Captain Brendon McCullum received a guard of honour from the Australian team as he headed out onto Seddon Park for his final fling in white ball cricket.
The sold out crowd lived every ball of his 27-ball 47, his three sixes ensuring he became the first player in history to hit 200 ODI sixes as well as 100 sixes in Test cricket. He also struck 91 sixes in Twenty20 Internationals.
The BLACKCAPS now head to a much anticipated two-match ANZ Test Series, beginning at the Basin Reserve on 12 February before the tour finale at Hagley Oval on 20 February.
