BLACKCAPS show support for St John

Two days out from their final One Day International against India at Eden Park, three BLACKCAPS took time off from their busy training schedule to chat with some of their long-time supporters.

The BLACKCAPS are supporters of St John – and the fans they are phoning are clients of the St John Caring Caller community service programme.

St John Caring Caller is a free community programme for the many New Zealanders who live on their own or are house-bound – often elderly, lonely and cut off from their community. When family and friends cannot be there for loved ones, St John can.

The Caring Caller service offers support and friendship to clients through a daily ‘friendship’ telephone call. At an agreed time each day, Caring Caller volunteers will ring their clients, making sure they are safe and that all is well at home.  Caring Caller volunteers might be asked to remind their clients to take their medication, or to remind them of upcoming medical appointments – or they may, as is the case when the BLACKCAPS come calling, simply be a friendly voice ringing to say hello.

The St John Caring Caller service is just one way that St John promotes the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders.  Caring Caller is a supportive and unobtrusive programme that encourages friendship, while helping to maintain an individual’s independence in their own home and in their community.
