BLACKCAPS bounce back

The BLACKCAPS bounced back to complete a six-wicket win over England the opening ODI of The National Bank Series at Wellington.

Jeetan Patel, Scott Styris and Chris Martin took two wickets as the tourists were limited to limited 130 all out.

The BLACKCAPS also instigated three run outs, sharp fielding capitalising on some indecisive running between the wickets.

In response, Jesse Ryder (31) and Brendon McCullum (42) enjoyed an opening partnership of 61 as the hosts completed a comprehensive victory inside 30 overs.

Paul Collingwood’s side came into the match on the back of two Twenty20 wins, but were not allowed to show the batting assault of their previous displays.

Opener Phil Mustard was the leading scorer with 31 from 60 balls, while Owais Shah was the next best in a below-par showing.

Collingwood won the toss and elected to bat first, with Alastair Cook recalled at the top of the order and Ravi Bopara replacing Dimitri Mascarenhas.

Home captain Daniel Vettori and Jacob Oram returned to the BLACKCAPS XI after injury, with Patel also moving in to the team.

Martin took both Cook (11) and Ian Bell (five), with Jacob Oram accounting for Kevin Pietersen (six).

But where the English middle order went up a gear in the Twenty20 matches, the BLACKCAPS were on top in the field, while streetwise bowling limited opportunities.

Patel wrapped up the innings by bowling James Anderson for three in the final over, completing a fine team showing.

The brisk start to the reply from the opening duo ensured the New Zealanders a solid platform to progress from, before Stuart Broad removed both of the top-order batsmen.

State Central Stags duo Ross Taylor (24 not out) and Jamie How added 39, the latter falling for 28.

Broad struck again to remove Styris, caught in the deep by Ryan Sidebottom, but victory was soon confirmed.
