Wellington has been the events capital over the last few months, with a huge crowd attending the opening match of the current Australian cricket tour, the Sevens and the Phoenix playing in front of sold out crowds. This Saturday the BLACKCAPS are looking forward to the same parochial support from Wellingtonians when they take on the Australians in the final match of the Chappell/Hadlee series.
BLACKCAPS captain Daniel Vettori appreciates the support saying, “"the crowds certainly step up when Australia are here, it's the series that all New Zealanders look forward to and I guess they get up for it as much as we do.”
Australia are by far the favourite touring team with just under 50% of fans surveyed in a recent online poll selecting our trans-Tasman rivals as the biggest drawcard.
The BLACKCAPS have been playing in front of sold out crowds at Eden Park in Auckland and Seddon Park in Hamilton. They are hoping the crowds will come out in force to cheer, chant and support them in the capital.
Positively Wellington Tourism Chief Executive David Perks urged fans to get behind the BLACKCAPS.
"It's fantastic that New Zealand Cricket has chosen Wellington for a hat-trick of matches in the series. We've had the Twenty20 match and now have a One-Day International and Test to look forward to,” he said.
"Westpac Stadium and the Allied Nationwide Finance Basin Reserve have been voted by Kiwi sports fans as the best venues in the country. The atmosphere is legendary because of the passionate crowds they attract.
“We've seen and heard how a Wellington crowd can put a twelfth man on the pitch and help get our teams across the line in tough matches."
