2024 Girls First XI Cup | CGHS and Tawa start strong!

Christchurch Girls’ High School and Tawa College have made the perfect start to their 2024 First XI Cup campaign, winning their first two matches at Lincoln University today.

CGHS were able to pick up a 58-run win against Ōtūmoetai College this morning, largely thanks to captain Sacha Arnold (58 off 29 balls) and Elise Dill-Russell (6-16), who picked up a remarkable six wickets off just four overs.

CGHS’ second win came thanks to Duckworth Lewis, holding a 10-run lead over Takapuna Grammar when the rain came.

Heidi Clouston (3-13) impressed with the ball for CGHS, while Takapuna captain Rishika Jaswal (55 off 57) played an important innings for her side.

Tawa College put together a clinical bowling performance in round one, bowling Takapuna out for just 66 runs.

Tessa Campbell (3-13) returned the best figures for TC, while captain Ava Conroy (40* off 38) saw her side home with a commanding innings.

A similar storyline played out in Tawa’s afternoon match, where they were able to pick up a 35-run victory (DLS method) against St Hilda’s.

Ava Conroy put together a strong case for player of the match, taking four wickets (4-17) with the ball, and smashing a quickfire 35 off 17 with the bat.

Palmerston North Girls High School were another side who looked in good touch after their first match, but a combination of a resurgent Ōtūmoetai and the rain prevented a result in their second.

In their first match, a team effort with the ball saw PNGHS bowl out St Hilda’s Collegiate for just 49 runs, Caitlyn Orr (2-5) and Ella James (2-3) the pick of the bowling unit.

PNGHS openers Aria Kearney (34* off 19) and Myah Dawson (13* off 12) made short work of the chase, eclipsing the total by the end of the 5th over.

Unfortunately, PNGHS & Ōtūmoetai College were unable to reach 5 over in the second innings of their afternoon game – meaning the match was a no result.

Aria Kearney (67* off 56) and Summer Lovegrove (41 off 27) both impressed for PNGHS, while Ōtūmoetai openers Mackenzie Grant (18* off 8) and Summer Taruia (18* off 13) were just finding their feet when the rain hit.
