The race for the last vacant spot in the national Hallyburton Johnstone Shield Final is down to just two teams. The Auckland Hearts completed step one of their weekend’s mission to stay within touching distance of the second-placed Central Hinds - who meanwhile lost to top qualifier the Sparks.
The Hearts raided Hagley Oval for a thrilling seven-run win against the Canterbury Magicians to remain alive heading into tomorrow’s 10th and final round of the regular season - when the two teams will meet for the last time this season, at the same venue.
The day had begun with the Magicians hanging onto their last thread of hope, having needed a perfect weekend, as well as other results to fall their way, in order to progress.
But the tight tussle with the Hearts put paid to that, in a match that saw Hearts captain Maddy Green, with a career-best 125 off 120 balls that underpinned her team’s total of 269/7; and powerful Magicians opener Kate Anderson (118 off 130, in the unsuccessful chase) trade centuries in a nailbiter.
