Wellington have completed an unconvincing two wicket win against Central in the first round of Twenty20 matches at the Provincial A tournament.
Chasing just 127 for victory Wellington lost regular wickets, but still had enough in the tank to win with five balls and two wickets to spare.
Central opted to bat first, but continually lost wickets just when they seemed to be finding their feet at the crease.
Their main players to make starts were Will Young (24) and Dean Robinson (21*), the latter unfortunate not to have more time at the crease to improve his score.
His team mates however had plenty of chances, with five of them getting to double figures before having to head back to the pavilion.
The inconsistent batting performance showed as Central only managed to make a mere 126 for seven from their 20 overs.
Scott Kuggeleijn was the pick of the bowlers for Wellington and claimed figures of three for 15 from three overs.
In reply Wellington opener Josh Brodie made an important 30 to start the chase, but saw the rest of his top order fall around him.
Thankfully for his team the middle order were more impressive as Stephen Murdoch and Tom Blundell got the chase back on track.
Blundell was dismissed on 36 which left Murdoch to try make the final runs. He had very little help from the other end, but managed to stay calm under considerable pressure to see Wellington to victory.
He finished on 32 not out while wickets tumbled at the other end, which left Wellington with a two wicket win after 19.1 overs.
Central bowled well to stay in the hunt, particularly Joe O’Conner who finished with figures of three for ten from two overs.
