Volts win by eight wickets

Shaun Haig and Craig Cumming cracked half centuries and also featured in a 117 run stand for the third wicket to steer Otago Volts to an eight wicket win over the Wellington Firebirds at the Allied Finance Basin Reserve in Wellington.

Haig was the dominant batsman, hitting an ubeatevn93 off 116 to record his highest Men’s One-Day score while Cumming stroked his way to 52 off 65 with the Volts easily reaching their target of 170 with nearly 15 overs to spare.

Former BLACKCAP fast bowler Mark Gillespie took both wickets to fall but leaked 30 runs off his 4.4 overs.

Earlier, an all round quality bowling display restricted the Wellington Firebirds to 169 all out.

The home side made a reasonable start with Cameron Merchant reaching 22 and Michael Pollard hitting 39 but then the wheels fell off as they lost a string of wickets, falling to 116 for 5.

A 40 run partnership for the sixth wicket between Chris Nevin (48) and Harry Boam (23) kept the bowlers at bay temporarily but a late order collapse saw them all out in the 44th over.

All of the Volts bowling figures looked good with Anthony Bullick the top wicket taker with three for 35.  Import Yasir Arafat returned impressive figures of two for 22 with Nathan McCullum picking up two for 38.

The Otago Volts are in fifth place on the points table with the Wellington Firebirds one back in sixth.
