A distinct lack of partnerships cost the Otago Volts any chance to get themselves on the Ford Trophy points board as the Canterbury Wizards handed out a 106-run thumping and collected a bonus point to boot at Hagley Oval.
Having won the toss, the Volts should have been pleased to restrict the home team to 284 at the ground, yet could find only a meagre 177 runs in reply as they suffered the ignominy of being bowled out with 10 overs to spare. 
Derek de Boorder was the only man to raise a 50 for the visitors, but it was a mute celebration with the captain and number four already holding on for dear life as the crash of regular wickets echoed in his ears.
Opener Sam Wells and Darren Broom had started the cascade when they were dislodged in the space of five balls, Wells becoming the first of five victims of the afternoon for Matt Henry (he would also finish off the final wicket to nail his maiden five-for in handsome fashion, his figures 5-27 from 9.5 overs, including two maidens), while Logan van Beek's three takes behind the stumps equalled the Wizards' keeping record.
With six wickets gone inside 21 overs, the calamitous chase simply petered out against the remorseless Wizards, whose own innings had got off to a far more substantial start thanks to solid opening batsman George Worker. Wells had been thrilled and relieved in equal measure to find Worker's edge when the batsman was just five shy of what should have been his third Ford Trophy century, Worker's head dropping as he heard the ball smack into the gloves behind him.
Wells would finish with two, while James McMillan bowled briskly as usual to finish with 3-39, stopping an aggressive Andrew Ellis on 44 after he had set a fifth-wicket partnership record between the two teams with Shanan Stewart. Stewart surged on to 75 off 66 before he was run out at the death, simply all too much for the off-kilter southerners who head into the third-round encounter against the table-topping SKYCITY Knights in Invercargill desperate to get a point on the board.
