Volts go top in nail biter

Otago Volts 204 (Hamish Rutherford 79, Neil Broom 47) beat Hell Wellington Firebirds 203 (Grant Elliott 70, James Franklin 68) by one run. 

In Dunedin, the Otago Volts hung on when the Hell Wellington Firebirds appeared to have victory within their grasp. Needing seven to win from the last, Jacob Duffy produced a fine final over to give the home side victory by a solitary run. 


The Volts Made 204 in the first innings on the back of a 107 run opening stand between Hamish Rutherford and Neil Broom. Rutherford was first to go, caught by Jeetan Patel from Luke Woodcock's bowling, with Ryan ten Doeschate continuing hte momentum in typically bruising fashion with 45 from 18 balls. 

In reply, Micheal Papps made 45 before Grant Ellliott and James Franklin's partnership of 137 gave the Firebirds almost the perfect run chase. Needin seven from the last, Duffy removed Elliott with two balls to go, with Graham Napier unable to score from either of the balls he faced, giving the Volts the one run win.
