Volts bowlers set up solid win

A brilliant all round bowling display by the Otago Volts attack secured a comprehensive 43 run win over the Canterbury Wizards at QEII Park in Christchurch.

Defending 159, opening bowler Neil Wagner got the Volts off to a great removing the openers inside three overs before spinners Nick Beard and Nathan McCullum put the screws on.

Beard took two for 25 with Nathan McCullum sneering two for 26 as the Canterbury batsman crumbled under pressure.

Debutant Dean Brownlie put up some resistance with 33 from 26 but the there was little else to cheer about for the home team.

Wagner picked up the final wicket to finish with three for 21 and now sits in fifth place on the overall MVP table.

Wicketkeeper Derek de Boorder kept beautifully, taking five catches, a stumping and assisting with a run-out.

Earlier, Neil Broom hit a cracking 58 off 37 to set up the Volts total. It was Broom’s first half century with his previous best being 36.

Brendon McCullum got the innings off to flyer with 23 from 17 with Hamish Rutherford making 31.

Canterbury bowler Ryan Burson was outstanding, taking four for 16 of his four overs, including three wickets in the final over.

The Otago Volts leap into second spot on the points table with two wins from three matches.
