Rain in the capital this afternoon has seen points shared between the Wellington Firebirds and Otago Volts, after only one innings was possible in The Ford Trophy clash at the Cello Basin Reserve.

The washout leaves the Firebirds, in fifth spot with one round to play, able to reach a maximum of 21 points, should they take a bonus-point win from their last round against the Auckland Aces, on 14 February.

With Canterbury already on 21 points and in third place on the table, that means a Canterbury win tomorrow at Hagley Oval against the Aces will knock the Firebirds out of the running, while the Volts remain in a must-win situation in fourth spot, three points behind Canterbury, with a big match against the higher ranked Northern Districts on 14 February plus other results set to determine their fate.

Before the covers went on at the innings break, the Otago Volts had restricted the Firebirds to 219/9 in their 50 overs, Volts opening paceman Matt Bacon continuing his good white-ball season with 3-35, including his 50th List A wicket, and spinner Dean Foxcroft with a tidy 2-30 off his 10 overs as he continues to press his all-round credentials.

Firebirds opener Luke Georgeson top-scored for the hosts with 48 before falling victim to Foxcroft, caught behind just shy of his half century, the Firebirds losing wickets at regular intervals and struggling to build a substantial partnership.

Twenty-three-year-old Hunter Kindley and 22-year-old Thorn Parkes each made their Ford Trophy debuts for the Volts without batting or bowling, Kindley at least getting in on the action with a field catch off Travis Muller to dismiss Jakob Bhula.

Adam Milne scored eight runs on his Wellington Firebirds Ford Trophy debut, but did not get the chance to get the ball in his hands for a bowl.
