Another quality bowling and batting display from the BLACKCAPS secured a comprehensive five wicket win over Bangladesh to seal the series with one match still to play.
Dunedin put on a cracking day for the second ODI at a picture perfect University Oval and the locals turned up in their droves to support the home side.
For the second match in a row Daniel Vettori won the toss, this time electing to bowl at Bangladesh. “I think it is better, at this ground, to have a target set. It’s a small ground so we wanted to know what we were chasing. It also looks like a good deck to have a bowl on.”
Earlier turf manager, Tom Tamati, said he was happy with the pitch. “I don’t usually cut the wicket before a match. The type of clay here and the soil sub-structure means it is better to leave a little grass on top and roll it into the pitch. It gives the ball a little more bounce and pace.”
If Vettors’s plan was to put early pressure it worked to perfection with front line bowlers, Daryl Tuffey and Andy McKay, had Bangladesh on the ropes quickly.
Openers, Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes, who performed well in Napier on Friday night, were both sitting back in the pavilion before the end of the fifth over.
Mohammad Ashraful only contributed 1 run before being dismissed with the score at 14 for three.
Bangladesh’s slide continued with Andy McKay dismissing captain Shakib Al Hasan with a swinging delivery that caught an inside edge and cannoned onto the stumps.
The introduction of Ian Butler paid-off immediately with the removal of Aftab Ahmed caught behind for ten. At 25 for five Bangladesh were reeling.
By this stage the New Zealand seam attack was bowling with menacing accuracy. From that point on it was a matter of survival as they searched for someone to steady the innings and build any kind of total.
The cavalry came for Bangladesh in the form of Mushfiqur Rahim and Naeem Islam. With the innings on the brink of complete disaster at 46 for six, the pair batted responsibly, before opening up with some magnificent shots.
The partnership was finally broken when Islam was dismissed for 43 and the partnership reaped 101. The star of the innings was undoubtedly Mushfiqur Rahim, coming in at a prickly time for the visitors in the twelfth over, he was finally dismissed for an excellent 86 in the final over.
The rearguard action created a respectable 183 for 8, given the parlous state of the innings earlier in the day.
The BLACKCAPS were almost as shaky at the start of their innings, with Brendon McCullum playing-on for nine after just six balls. Martin Guptil made a quick-fire 32 before departing with the score on 52.
The introduction of Taylor only served to make the Bangladeshi team’s day worse. The New Zealand number four has been in sublime form through the HRV Cup and he immediately accelerated the New Zealand innings.
Peter Ingram has made every post a winner since his BLACKCAP debut last week, making a patient 28 before holing-out in the 19th over.
By then the score was 100 for three. With Taylor in imperious form the BLACKCAPS powered on with the batting star falling for 78 off 52 balls with only four runs required for victory but not before he treated the Dunedin faithful to five massive sixes and six stylish fours.
Neil Broom came and went for a golden duck with Vettori swatting a boundary of the only ball he faced to wrap up the victory with over 22 overs to spare. James Franklin remained unbeaten on 20.
The teams now move to Christchurch for the third and final One-Day International on Thursday 11th February.
