Solid 78 Run Win For Wizards Over Firebirds

The State Canterbury Wizards accounted for the State Wellington Firebirds with a 78 run win in their State Shield match at QEII Park in Christchurch.

Canterbury fell away towards the end of their innings to be nine down with 242 on the board.

At one stage the Wizards were 175 for 3 but the dismissal of Johannes Myburgh for 51 sparks a collapse that saw them lose six wickets for 67 runs.

Michael Papps was once again solid at the top of the order with 46, while Shanan Stewart top scored with 53.

State MVP overall leader, Graham Napier, was again on target for the Firebirds taking three for 44 off 10.  Mark Gillespie also took three scalps.

It was a stuttering reply by Wellington as they struggled to build partnerships throughout their innings.

All rounder Luke Woodcock made 53 and was the only Wellington batsman to get past 20.

Former Blackcaps Chris Harris and Shane Bond were economical and picked up a scalp each with Bond only going for 24 off his ten. Andrew Ellis and Brandon Hiini picked up two wickets each .

The results see the State Wellington Firebirds move down to fifth place with the State Canterbury Wizards one point behind Otago in fourth.
