Red Hot Martin sets up win for Sparks

The Otago Sparks have chased down 234 to beat the Wellington Blaze by four wickets at Molyneux Park, Alexandra.

Batting star Katey Martin set up the win with an outstanding 92 from 107 balls.  It is Martin’s fourth half century in five matches this season and her highest One-Day score.  Martin now sits fifth on the overall MVP points table.

Other contributions came from White Fern’s Sarah Tsukigawa who made 46 and Suzie Bates with 36.

Blaze bowler Sophie Devine lead a fight back with some late wickets and managed to slow the run rate but with plenty of runs scored early on the Otago lower order limped to a four wicket win.

Devine finished with the tidy figures of three for 28 with Sian Ruck, Evans and Lucy Doolan picking up one wicket each.

Earlier, Wellington made a competitive 234 thanks to a 56 from Megan Wakefield and 42 from opener Sarah Bradbury.

Some late hitting from Sophie Devine (37 from 37) and Elizabeth Perry (37 from 23) propelled the score but with wickets in hand the Blaze will be regretting the fact they didn’t push a little harder.

Bates was the best of the Sparks attack taking 39 for three with spinner Emma Campbell sneering two scalps.
