Michael Papps yearned for one more run. NZC

Rare result at the Basin

In a result that pleased the SKYCITY Northern Knights more than anyone else, and not so much the Volts or Firebirds who desperately wanted a win to get up the table, the first DLS tied match in New Zealand domestic history was proclaimed after heavy rain prevented the Firebirds' chase from being completed in round six at the Basin Reserve.

The Volts had set them a target of 250, and the gloomy clouds that had been advancing finally cracked open when the Firebirds were 74/1.

Volts paceman Jacob Duffy played a pivotal role with a superb opening spell of 1-8 off five overs, while for the Firebirds it was their first ever white ball tied game in New Zealand domestic competition.

Captain Michael Papps, unbeaten on 30 when the rain came, scored his 5000th List A run. Earlier, Neil Broom had backed up his century in the previous game with a half-century, and was once again the Volts' top-scorer.

Broom now has the second highest run tally in this season's Ford Trophy (313) as Anton Devcich (330) went past him in Whangarei for number one spot with his unbeaten 99.
