The Devon Hotel Central Stags were keen to make up for lost time, having waited a fortnight to get their first win on the board. Meanwhile the Mondiale Auckland Aces had second spot on the points table in their sights. But as a drizzly, blustery front moved across Auckland, neither side got what they wanted as the season notched up its first damp squib.

Stags captain Kruger van Wyk had earlier won the toss and decided on a bowl, and sprung a surprise by opening with spinner Ajaz Patel — who returned the faith with a maiden. Only the first two overs of play were possible before the weather turned, however, and the covers came on for the remainder of the day.
