Northern Knights ease to seven wicket win

A second wicket partnership of 145 between BJ Watling and Kane Williamson set up a dominant seven wicket victory over the Wellington Firebirds in the Men’s One-Day match at the Basin Reserve in Wellington

They made light work of the run chase, with Watling hitting 50 and Kane Williamson striking 108 not out reaching the target off 217 with 17 overs to spare.

Williamson’s knock, his third One-Day century, came off only 102 balls with seven boundaries and five sixes as he batted through the innings.  It was also his highest score, beating his previous best of 107 by one run and he now leads the One-Day MVP.

Flynn came in with 70 still required and quickly hit 45 off only 35 deliveries to close out the win.

Former BLACKCAPS fast bowler Mark Gillespie marked his return to the team with two for 47.

Earlier, Chris Nevin struck a responsible 69 and shared a vital 54 run partnership with Luke Woodcock after they were looking shaky at 86 for four.

Woodcock went on to make 52 with Harry Boam chipping in with a brisk 37 off 34 balls but it was the loss of set batsmen at key times that hurt the Firebirds.

It was an all round quality bowling display by the Knights with Bradley Scott’s two for 30 the best figures.  Graeme Aldridge also took two with Brent Arnel, Joseph Yovich and Anton Devcich picking up one apiece.

The win sees the Northern Knights overtake the Wellington Firebirds and move into fourth on the points table after six rounds.
