Northern finish on positive

The Northern Districts have beaten Otago by six wickets in their last game of the Provincial A Tournament in Lincoln.

Needing 124 for victory, Northern played sensibly to make the required runs with four balls remaining.

The southerners decided to bat first and were once again buoyed by the performance of opener Hamish Rutherford who continued his fine form with 43 from 28 deliveries.

He was however one of only two players to make double figures for Otago.

The other two were Ian Butler (12) and Daryl Broom (29) while their team mates crumbled around them.

Jacob Duffy was run out off the final ball of the innings to see Otago all out for 123 at the end of 20 overs.

In reply Northern relied on two batsmen who have performed throughout the tournament – Daryl Mitchell and Brook Hatwell.

The pair put on 90 for the third wicket and effectively gifted the game to Northern to finish the tournament on a positive note.

Mitchell racked up another half century with 54, while Hatwell fell just short with 47.

JJ Boult saw to the final runs with 12 to see Northern home with four balls and six wickets in the bank.
