Magicians get one back over Sparks

The Canterbury Magicians claimed a 64 run win over the Otago Sparks, thanks to a brilliant century from Frances Mackay.

Played at Mainpower Oval in Rangiora, the Magicians posted a whopping 307 for four in the first innings. The Sparks weren’t up to the task in the pursuit and were held to 243 for nine from their 50 overs.

Suzie Bates led the reply with 58, while Katey Martin (47) and Polly Inglis (41) also contributed. What they had needed though was someone to make a century, but it wasn’t forth coming.

Mackay added to her century with bowling figures of three for 45 from ten overs.

Earlier it had been her bat doing all the talking, as the 22 year-old showed just how bright a prospect she is with 116 from 126 balls.

It was a mature innings, which featured just nine fours, but still came at a good clip. She found ample support as well, combining with Meg Kendal (57) to put on 122 for the first wicket.

Hayley Jenson provided 43, while Janet Brehaut hit 23 off 18 at the end of the innings.

It was a big win for last year’s finalists who go to second on the table, albeit eight points behind the Auckland Hearts.
