Magicians cruise to 43 run win

The Canterbury Magicians remain top of the Action Twenty20 points table after their comfortable 43 run win over Northern Spirit at QEII Park in Christchurch.

Three of the top four Canterbury batsmen hit 30 or better as the hosts piled on 151 for four after winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Franky Mackay and Michelle Mitchell got the innings off to a great start with 54 in 6.2 overs before Mitchell fell for 36 off 22.  Mackay was next to go for 30 before captain Amy Satterthwaite lashed 31 off 26 and Maria Fahey blasted 35 off 26.

The Spirit openers got the run chase off to a steady start, putting on 64 for the first wicket but tight Canterbury bowling made runs hard to come by.  The loss of opener Krista Neilson for 20 brought Northern’s star player Nic Browne to the crease but she only lasted one ball with Natalie Dodd following shortly after fro 32.

The Canterbury bowlers stuck to the task and although only took five wickets, kept the Northern Spirit to just 108.

Rachel Candy was the most impressive taking two for 14 off her three overs.
