Canterbury Magicians captain Frances Mackay chalked up the first century of the New Zealand domestic white-ball summer, but a ferocious career best from opening counterpart Katie Gurrey saw Northern Spirit take a rare, big win off the hosts to open the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield season with a bang.

Gurrey’s 123 off 121 balls was just her second one-day century and underpinned the upset, batting through into the 45th over. By the time she was finally dismissed, her side needed just 14 further runs to tick off a five-wicket win with four overs to spare.

Earlier, Mckay had blazed 13 boundaries in a knock of 103 — her ninth one-day hundred for Canterbury, in her 99th match — but there’s no doubting she’d prefer a win for her 100th cap tomorrow.

Batting into the 42nd over with support from first drop Jacinta Savage (54) and Natalie Cox (a career best, unbeaten 54*), Mackay ensured her side was able to post a healthy 261 for four after she had elected to bat first at Hagley — but Northern Spirit’s top order were up for the challenge.

Gurrey combined with WHITE FERN Bernadine Bezuidenhout (46) in a 110-run opening stand, then put on 88 for the third wicket with new Spirit captain Felicity Leydon-Davis who was in sight of a half century before she was bowled by Jacinta Savage on 42.
