All good things can indeed come to those who wait.
That was certainly the case today when Brendon Diamanti scored his first domestic one-day century in his 56th match at the age of 30.
The former international’s maiden one-day century enabled the Wizards to post a respectable score of 239 for nine in a Ford Trophy match against the Auckland Aces.
Diamanti lit up Colin Maiden Park by scoring 102 not out in the Wizards’ otherwise ordinary innings before rain cut short the Aces’ reply at 138 for five in the 29th over.
Under the Duckworth Lewis system the Wizards won the match by six runs, leaving the Aces frustrated they did not have the chance to press on with Gareth Hopkins unbeaten on 55 off 57 balls after sharing an 82-run partnership with Colin Munro, who made his 53 off 55 balls.
But at least Diamanti had the opportunity to celebrate his maiden century with a win and he deserved to do just that after smacking his runs off only 79 balls, with seven sixes and four fours during 97 minutes at the crease.
Of the others, only George Worker, with 36, and Tom Latham, 34, stuck around for any time but Diamanti forged ahead as wickets tumbled regularly at the other end.
Tall fast bowler Michael Bates came in for some punishment and while he took four wickets they cost 79 runs off his 10 overs.
Spinner Bhupinder Singh was arguably the pick of the attack as he finished with two for 40 off 10 and Colin de Grandhomme had one for 35 off eight.
