Devine key in Blaze win

Sophie Devine went on a rampage in the Wellington Blaze’s Twenty20 match against the Central Hinds and guided her side to a convincing seven wicket victory.

Chasing the Hinds first innings total of 104, Devine clobbered her way to an unbeaten 71 to claim a first round victory after 15 overs.

Renee Moffitt (11) and Leigh Kasperek (10) provided small cameos, but Devine needed little help as she slammed three sixes and ten fours in an electric 45 ball innings.

No bowler was safe, with all of the Hinds’ attack feeling the Blaze Skipper’s wrath. Abby Burrows was the only one to find any success with two wickets for 18 runs off her four overs.

Earlier the Hinds had made their way past the 100 mark thanks to 34 from opener Rachel Priest and 30 from all-rounder Kate Broadmore.

Just as Broadmore had looked to finish with a flourish, she was sent packing by 17 year-old Thamsyn Newton. The medium pace bowler showed she was one to watch out for in the future and finished with figures of two for 27 from four overs.

The Hinds will get their chance at redemption tomorrow when they square off in the first of the One-Day matches.
