The State Canterbury Magician’s proved that they know how to win the big one, stealing victory from the jaws of defeat to win the women’s one day State League final by two wickets.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Wellington managed 197 with Canterbury reaching the target by getting a single off the very last ball of the match.
Wellington’s highest score came from Megan Wakefield who made 41 off 58. Wakefield has been their highest run scorer for the season and took her tally to 404 – second only to Northern Spirit all-rounder Nicola Browne.
Sarah Bradbury contributed 33, Elizabeth Perry made 30 and Anna Dodd hit 29 not out at the end.
Amy Satterthwaite took three for 32 with fellow Canterbury and White Fern bowler Beth McNeill taking two for 35.
Wellington have been the masters of defending moderate totals and looked like they were on track again today, taking regular wickets and bowling economically.
They had the defending champions at 160 for eight after 46.1 at one point but Canterbury lower batsman Amber Boyce smashed 30 off 15 to get the Magician’s their third title in a row.
The Canterbury top order struggled, using too many deliveries for too few runs and have the lower order to thank for their silverware.
Number eight batsman Beth McNeill made 31 off 32 with wicketkeeper batsman Rowan Milburn coming in at number seven to hit 21 not out.
But it was number nine Boyce who was the hero after getting her team across the line, a might achievement against the international pair of Sophie Devine and Lucy Doolan who had the unenviable task of bowling the final over.
Devine was the pick of the Wellington attack taking three for 29 with Anna Dodd taking two for 17.
The State Wellington Blaze will have to pick themselves up and move on as they face the State Canterbury Magicians in the State League Twenty20 final tomorrow afternoon at the Basin Reserve.
