Broom to the rescue

In Short
A composed maiden ODI century from the recalled Neil Broom and an unrelenting bowling performance on a tough pitch saw the BLACKCAPS clinch a 2-0 victory in the ANZ ODI series against Bangladesh.

Scene Set

Surrounded by sea and mountains and bathed in sunshine - is there any place you'd rather be than Saxton Oval during the silly season!? The early cloud above burnt away as Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and chose to bat, armed with a team featuring three new faces. The BLACKCAPS remained unchanged.

A Different Bangladesh

Seemingly primed with a game under their belt, the visitors went out hot. Led by captain Mashrafe Mortaza (3-49) they made crucial early in-roads, removing the BLACKCAPS' big three of Tom Latham, Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson inside the first 15 overs. Tighter lines, some more gusto and a slightly holding pitch allowing the visitors to take the early control.

Partnerships

With Neil Broom looking assured he needed partners to right the ship. Jimmy Neesham came first and looked a million dollars before he went for one to many and was stumped for a brisk 28, having put on 51 for the fourth wicket. Luke Ronchi would also add a valuable 38 as the hosts scrapped their way to a decent total.

Brilliant Broom

Clearly a cut above the rest today. Worked his way into the innings nicely picking off runs all around the wicket and finished with a big flourish to get the BLACKCAPS through to a total they could bowl at. Where's he been for six years you may ask?

A Tough Start

It looked early on like Bangladesh's opening pair of Iqbal and Kayes were right at home on the Saxton Oval pitch, frustrating the BLACKCAPS bowlers early. It wouldn't be until the eighth over that Southee could breakthrough. The tall paceman coaxing a drive from Iqbal that went right into the welcoming hands of Tom Latham.

Tipping Point?

Rahman and Kayes were putting together a formidable partnership for Bangladesh and looked to be swinging the game well in their side's favour. But a running mix up saw the pair come completely unstuck and Rahman had to head for the sheds after helping take his side to 105.

The Squeeze

The running mix up between Rahman and Kayes was just the opening the BLACKCAPS needed to grind back into the game and Lockie Ferguson helped them charge right back into contention. After dropping a catch the Auckland quick came onto bowl the very next over and sent one right through Mahmudullah.

Williamson Wonder

Captain Kane Williamson's call to bring himself to the bowling crease proved inspired as he claimed 3-22 in the crucial middle overs. Williamson's ability to extract regular wickets proved vital in slowing down the Bangladesh charge.

Game Over

After Williamson's strikes it was Trent Boult (2-26) and Mitchell Santner (1-20) who returned to keep the pressure on and eventually finish the job. Bangladesh eventually bowled out for 184 in the 43rd over, 67 runs short of a total they probably felt they should have got. Two-nil BLACKCAPS and a chance to whitewash the series on New Year's Eve.
