Auckland had already secured the Under 18 tournament trophy, but still had enough in the tank to beat Wellington in their Twenty20 match at Lincoln.
Wellington posted 134 for eight in their twenty overs. It was a score that challenged Auckland, but still wasn’t enough to beat them.
Wellington’s innings could only be described as scrappy, with many players making starts, but wickets falling far too regularly to accumulate a decent total.
Brett Johnson once again top scored for his side with 33, but failed to convert that into a big score. One or two other players also surpassed the 20 run mark to propel Wellington to their total of 134 for eight.
Captain Ben Horne showed he wasn’t just capable with the bat by picking up figures of two for 23 from four overs.
In reply Auckland weren’t as dominant as expected and lost far more wickets than in previous matches when chasing such a low score.
However such a classy line-up was always going to prevail and 42 from Mark Chapman and plenty of starts from the rest of the top-order ended the match with two balls to spare and making the 134 with five wickets in hand.
It was the end of a fantastic tournament for Auckland and not quite such a good one for Wellington.
