New Zealand’s leading cricket match officials continue to make their mark on the world stage, with Chris Gaffaney, Jeff Crowe, Kim Cotton and Wayne Knights featuring prominently in New Zealand Cricket’s Match Official panels for the 2026/27 season.
Gaffaney remains a member of the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires and continues to officiate regularly in the game’s biggest international series and tournaments, while Crowe continues to represent New Zealand on the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
Cotton retains her place on the ICC Emerging Women’s Umpire Panel, while Auckland’s Knights has been rewarded for his consistency and strong performances with elevation to the ICC Emerging Men’s Umpire Panel.
Auckland’s Tina Semmens continues to enhance New Zealand’s international presence following her appointment to the ICC International Panel of Umpires last season. Semmens retains her place on the NZC Emerging Women’s Umpire Panel for 2026/27 alongside Northern Districts’ Christelle High and newcomer Regan Combe of Central Districts.
Combe’s inclusion follows her continued development through New Zealand Cricket’s umpiring pathway and is recognition of strong performances at regional level.
The NZC G.J. Gardner Homes National Umpire Panel remains unchanged for the season ahead, providing continuity and an experienced core of officials across the domestic game.
Alongside New Zealand’s representation on the ICC Elite and Emerging panels, National Umpire Panel members Shaun Haig, Chris Brown and Cory Black continue to represent New Zealand on their International Umpire Panel, while Match Referees Trudy Anderson and Shayne O’Connor remain active on the international circuit.
NZC Head of Match Officials Andrew Duncan said the breadth of New Zealand representation internationally was something the domestic officiating system could be proud of.
“For a relatively small cricket nation, New Zealand continues to make a significant contribution to world cricket officiating.
“We’re fortunate to have representatives on both the ICC Elite Umpire and Match Referee Panels, together with officials continuing to progress through the ICC Emerging and International pathways.
“We have an experienced and high-performing group at the top level, but what’s equally encouraging is the depth underneath them. There are officials throughout the country pushing for higher honours and we want to continue providing opportunities for them to develop and progress.”
There is also a change to the NZCPA Umpire Scholarship Programme, with former Otago representative Nathan Morland named as the latest recipient following the withdrawal of Bevan Small.
Morland, who played 34 first-class and 38 List A matches for Otago between 1996 and 2004, has been recognised for the progress he has made since taking up umpiring during the 2025/26 season. The scholarship programme is a joint initiative between New Zealand Cricket and the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association, designed to encourage former players to transition into umpiring and strengthen the future talent pool of New Zealand officials.
The NZC Match Referee Panel is unchanged for the season ahead, with Anderson and O’Connor continuing to receive international opportunities alongside their domestic commitments.
At regional level, all six Major Associations have confirmed their umpire panels for the season ahead, continuing to provide an important pathway between community, regional and national cricket.
NZC has also confirmed its scoring panels for the 2026/27 season, with 18 scorers selected on the National Scorer Panel and a further 14 on the Reserve Scorer Panel.
The scoring structure continues to provide experienced coverage across the domestic game while establishing a pathway for scorers to progress towards national-level appointments.
“Scorers are an important part of our match officials group and the quality and accuracy of their work is critical to the professional game,” said Duncan.
“We have some hugely experienced people within our scoring group, but just as importantly we have scorers developing through the Reserve Panel and pushing for further opportunities.
“We want umpiring, refereeing and scoring to all have clear pathways that give people the opportunity to develop and perform at the highest level they are capable of.”
The New Zealand domestic season gets underway in October, with match officials across the country preparing for another busy summer of domestic and representative cricket.
