Otago Sparks opening bowler Kate Heffernan was a surprise selection in the WHITE FERNS T20 squad to play West Indies at home in early 2018.
The 18-year-old soon lived up to her billing as a player to watch by taking the new ball on debut and returning the sparkling figures of 1-14 from her four overs.
A tall left-armer who swings the ball, Heffernan is somewhat of a rare bread in the women's game.
Her debut performance certainly impressed bowling coach Jacob Oram.
“I’d only seen her at a few training sessions and so I wasn’t sure what we were going to get, but I tell you what for an 18-year-old she didn’t look overawed," he said.
"She definitely has some skill there and being a left-armer who swings it back into the right-hander - that’s gold dust.”
