Rutherford to the rescue

Hamish Rutherford has answered the BLACKCAPS call to come to Sri Lanka as cover after opener Martin Guptill was ruled out of the third and final T20 with a right abdomen strain.

Guptill suffered the injury while fielding and didn’t open the batting as the BLACKCAPS chased down 161 to claim the second T20I in Kandy by four wickets.

Otago Volts and Worcestershire opener Hamish Rutherford has answered the BLACKCAPS call to come to Sri Lanka as cover.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead confirmed Rutherford would join the squad on Thursday, as cover for Central Stags batsman Tom Bruce who tweaked his right knee while batting in game two.

The Otago Volts opener has been playing for English county side Worcestershire and will miss their T20 Blast Quarter-Final to come to Sri Lanka.

Rutherford, 30, last played for New Zealand in a Test against Sri Lanka in January 2015 and has 27 internationals to his name.

There’s better news for Ross Taylor (left hip) who is fit and available for the final T20 on Friday night (Saturday 1.30am NZT).
