Wellington washout keeps HRV Twenty20 tight

The mascots danced in the rain to make the sun come out, but it was all in vain as the big clash between the Hell Wellington Firebirds and Otago Volts was abandoned without a ball bowled this afternoon at a drenched Hawkins Basin Reserve.

The scheduled game had been hotly anticipated by both teams, with the third-placed Firebirds looking to join the Volts in second spot with a win, while victory to the southerners would have seen them overtake the SKYCITY Northern Knights at the top of the table in the race for automatic entry to the HRV Twenty20 Final.

However, both teams took two points from the abandonment - meaning the top trio of teams edge further ahead of the chasing pack, with the Volts joining the Knights at the head of the table on 16 points.

The Firebirds now head to their New Year's Day party in New Plymouth against the bottom-placed Devon Hotel Central Stags while the Volts meet the Auckland Aces in a televised Friday night match at Eden Park on 3 January.
