A late thrust from the Wellington lower-order helped them cruise to a 125 run victory over Otago in their third round Provincial A match at Lincoln.
Batting first Wellington managed to post 273 for nine from their 50 overs. In reply Otago were never in control of their pursuit and after 41.3 overs were dismissed for 148.
Most of the highlights from Otago’s chase came at the start of the innings, with opener Jamie Glenn top-scoring with 54 from 71 balls.
He wasn’t well supported though, with four of the next five batsmen making double digits but no-one making more than 20.
It didn’t get any better for the southerners either, as the middle and lower-order collapsed to be all out in the 42nd over.
Barry Rhodes backed up yesterday’s four wicket bag with another today and finished with impressive figures of four for 34 from ten overs.
Earlier, Otago had been in a bright position having reduced Wellington to 118 for seven.
Opener Ben Orton scored 27, while yesterday’s centurion Josh Brodie made just 11.
However just when it looked like Otago would be chasing a low total, Wellington’s lower order produced some magic.
Tom Blundell (82) and Ili Tugaga (57) put on a whopping 125 on for the eight wicket. It took their side to an extremely respectable score of 270 plus and essentially ensured another win for Wellington.
