Thrilling Last Wicket Win to Otago Sparks

The State Otago Sparks scrambled to a one wicket win in the last over of their State League match against the State Northern Spirit at Queens Park in Invercargill.

Northern won the toss and elected to bat, putting on 188 in their 50 overs.

Sixteen year old Natalie Dodd was the Spirit’s best batsman, making a patient 43 at the top of the order.  Nicola Dodd was the next best, scoring 28.

Emma Campbell continued her fine bowling form, taking four for 31 from her ten overs.  Campbell has 17 wickets at 9.4 this season.

English international, Lynsey Askew, was also on target returning figures of three for 35.

The Otago Sparks looked to be cruising at 165 for four but the dismissal of Abby Kitchin for 25 sparked a collapse that very nearly saw the game slip away.

Kitchen shared a 75 run partnership with all-rounder Sarah Tsukigawa who top scored for the Sparks with 66.

Otago lost five wickets for 22 runs, including a run out off the fourth ball of the last over, but managed to sneak in a single to win the match by one wicket.

Nine bowlers were used by Northern with Nicola Browne,  Louise Milliken and  Morna Nielsen picking up two wickets each.

The result lifts the State Otago Sparks of the bottom of the table and into fourth place, one  above the State Northern Spirit.
