Sri Lanka defeat BLACKCAPS to top the group

The BLACKCAPS lost their final group stage match to Sri Lanka by 112 runs in Mumbai to leave them third on the table with Pakistan and Australia yet to play.

Sri Lanka’s total of 265-9 was set up by a superb 111 by captain Kumar Sangakkara while Muttiah Muralitharan took 4-25 to restrict the BLACKCAPS to 153.

The BLACKCAPS started positively and their bowling attack, minus injured stars Daniel Vettori and Kyle Mills, kept Sri Lanka in check and at the innings break were feeling confident.

Tim Southee was once again on song taking three wickets and completing a run-out while Nathan McCullum returned tidy figures of two for 48 off ten.

However, the batting let the side down with Ross Taylor’s 33 the best.  Jacob Oram looked in good touch but was left stranded on 20 with the rest of the line up folding easily.

Hamish Bennett, who left the field with a calf injury after bowling 4.1 overs, was the last man out after 35 overs.
