Former Firebird Michael Pollard painted it red with his first one-day ton for his new side at their home ground. It was a fighting effort, but he didn’t get enough hometown support around him to chase down a win for struggling Ford Trophy defending champions Canterbury.

Instead, ND bounced back from a drubbing up north to bowl out their hosts with a handful of overs to spare as the Cantabrians fell well short of their 275 target, all out for 231.

Seam machine Brent Arnel led the way with 4-40, mopping up the tail to reward himself for a good afternoon’s toil, sterling support coming from Ish Sodhi, Scott Kuggeleijn, Anton Devcich and Brett Randell who all returned restrictive figures for their toil.

Batting first after having claimed the toss, earlier the ND batsmen had likewise mostly done their bit, building partnerships in solid blocks, even if Devcich was the sole batsman to reach a half century before he was caught and bowled by Ben Stokes. Matt Henry and Todd Astle meanwhile picked up three-fa’s.

Stokes continued to grab the headlines despite just the one wicket, a catch and then a day to forget as he was run out by a direct hit from without scoring — one of three ducks in the Cantabrian innings.

Had Pollard had just a bit more support from his teammates, it may well have been ND left smarting; instead the only other scores of note were Michael Davidson’s 33 and Cam Fletcher’s half century at seven as the struggle to reach the target became more and more difficult for the red and blacks.

The Ford Trophy now goes into remission until late January 2018, resuming at the completion of Burger King Super Smash which begins this Wednesday afternoon.
