Rain ends Wizards hopes

Rain forced the Canterbury Wizards to put their feet up instead of kicking on for a potential Ford Trophy one-day win in Mt Maunganui today.

They were certainly in the box seat after scoring a challenging 267 for nine in their 50 overs against the Northern Knights at Bay Oval.

In most cases that would represent a winning score but the Wizards will never know because rain fell during the break between innings and did not relent, leaving officials no choice but to abandon the match.

The Wizards produced a collective effort with the bat as captain Peter Fulton led the way with 66 off 79 balls.

But there was ample back up, because another five batsmen made 20 or better, with openers Rob Nicol and George Worker both making 34, impressive youngster Henry Nicholls 32, allrounder Andrew Ellis 26 not out off 24 balls and Todd Astle 20 off 23 towards the end.

The Knights were well served by two bowlers in particular, with experienced seamer Brent Arnel taking four for 44 off his full complement of 10 overs, the same workload as Jason Donnelly, who returned three for 45.
