Northern too good for Sparks

The Northern Spirit have made it three from three against the Otago Sparks as they beat the Southerners in the Action Cricket Twenty20 tournament.

Chasing just 120 for victory, the Spirit did it with ease and eventually finished the game with eight wickets in hand in the 19th over.

Otago were put into bat by Northern and lost the crucial wicket of Suzie Bates early. Thanks to Katey Martin the Sparks recovered, the Captain making 43 at a run a ball.

Unfortunately that was the largest of the contributions for Otago, with wickets falling regularly. Victoria Abbott (22) and Lisa Grant (16) chipped in as well to help lift Otago to 118 for nine from 20 overs.

Nicola Browne kept up her brilliant form with the ball as she destroyed the Spark’s bowling line up with figures of four for 17 from four overs.

Opener Hannah Trollip made sure that Northern got off to the best possible start, until she fell just short of her half century on her way to 46.

However her dismissal meant little to the outcome of the game. Anna Peterson (43) and Nicola Browne (25) batted superbly and lead the Spirit to an easy victory in the 19th over.

It was an impressive eight wicket win for Northern as they inflicted another heavy loss on Otago.
